• She Really Can Act: Shu Qi delivers a surprisingly tense, realistic, and gripping performance as a Mama Bear who will do anything to save her missing child.
• Tear Jerker:
  • Yim Hung's flashback, losing her husband, and then her son. Their death scenes come one after another and is milked for all the drama's worth.
  • Also the final scene when May eventually reunites with her son... and much to the poor mother's chagrin, her child outright disowns her!
• The Woobie:
  • Poor May suffered the worst fears a young mother could face when her only child ends up being kidnapped, goes through hell and back in order to save her son, and ultimately when she confronts the "monster" who abducts her child... the boy ends up rejecting his own mother, having grown attached to the "monster".
  • The "monster", actually a human woman named Yim Hung, also counts, when she is revealed to be a Tragic Villain who lose her family after being evicted from the slums and gradually lose her grip on sanity as the year goes by. Her reason for abducting May's only child is due to trying to seek a replacement for her dead son.
