• Captain Obvious Reveal: For some, it was very obvious that Tan-Feng was Tien-Chou's sister. Even You-Ming Elder in the English dub lampshades the fact.
• Complete Monster: The Bloodsucking Sect Chief, despite being the film's first of many villains, turns out far worse than any subsequent antagonists. Leading the Blood Sect and embracing virgin sacrifices regularly, the Sect Chief have his underlings abduct numerous young women and kill anyone who got in their way, to have them sacrificed in order to awaken an ancient demon for the Chief to gain access to its powers, gloating maniacally as his servants carve up an abducted captive.
• Visual Effects of Awesome: From magic flames to ghosts and skeletons, this movie is widely considered the Shaw's peak when it comes to special effects.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The 7 Grandmasters were a group of kung-fu experts of various schools (one of them being a rogue shaolin monk) whom had been working under Monster Yu's thumb in order to get their hands on the Holy Flames. Unfortunately, they got little to no screen time except for the beginning and near the end, wasting a perfect villain group that could have served as antagonists against both Tien-Chou in his adventure.
