  • Narm:
    • The Old Mill that the dogs use for meetings also doubles as a sort of night club for the canine community, complete with an in-house band that sings and plays instruments. This would fit in with a more cartoonish or fantastic franchise like All Dogs Go to Heaven, but the Balto series is much more grounded in reality, pseudo-Inuit spiritualism aside. Making things worse is that the characters sing cover versions of songs that in Real Life don't exist until several decades in the future. Fortunately, none of the dogs rap or dress in costume like in Titanic: The Legend Goes On.
    • There are a few Anthropomorphic Zig-Zag moments, such as the canine characters switching out words like "dogs" and "paws" with "men" and "hands," which can be a bit off-putting.
  • Narm Charm:
    • Balto and Jenna, while displaying normal affection for their species like nuzzling and licking much of the time, also kiss each other like humans do, sometimes even having full makeout sessions; obviously, dogs can't do that due to having differently structured mouths than humans. However, their romantic interactions are so warm and lovely that it's pretty easy to just go with it.
    • The idea that dogs marry each other and have weddings the same way humans do rather than simply live as mates, let alone that they need permission from the "alpha dog" Doc to do so, is pretty silly. However, Balto and Jenna's wedding is given a lot of build-up throughout the first three stories, leading to an emotional and satisfying payoff when it finally happens.
