YMMV / Heidi's Song

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Many of the numbers. During the "Dreams" sequence. Hoyt Curtin shows off his orchestra chops even more than he was already used to doing on Hanna-Barbera music.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Heidi's bizarre Dream Sequence on her first night staying with her grandfather. She travels into a fantastical world of weird mountain monsters (even the mountain itself becomes a creature) who are never seen or mentioned again after the sequence ends — after all, it is just a dream.
  • He Really Can Act: While no one can deny Sammy Davis Jr.'s skill as a performer, he was usually known for being smooth and charismatic. Here, he plays a villain, and you can tell that he's really into it. The way Head Ratte's voice rasps in certain lines (most notably, "Unless your style / is so vile / you can cause a sensation) is just incredibly well done. His performance manages to be both sinister and oddly charming at the same time.
  • Moment of Awesome: The hijinks of the singing, dancing Head Ratte, voiced by Sammy Davis Jr.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The Nightmare Sequence of Heidi's dream where she is dancing with bizarre creatures in the middle of the night when suddenly the mountain comes to life and turns into a monster that tries to grab Heidi.
    • Prior to this sequence, Heidi's grandfather taunts her about all the creatures she encounters in said nightmare and at one point, he nearly causes her to fall head-first into the burning fireplace.
    • The She's a Nothing song sequence. The song involves Rottenheimer and Sebastian bullying Heidi by telling her she's small and worthless in various creative ways (or at least, Rottenheimer is creative. Sebastian just keeps repeating what she says.) The scene features a creepy Disney Acid Sequence where the two villains (and Schnoodle) morph into monstrous versions of themselves. Rottenheimer's monster form resembles a Wicked Witch. To make things worse, her voice gains an echo effect when she turns monstrous. The music itself uses very eerie instruments (and the scene, eerie sound effects towards the end) that make the song spine-chilling to listen to.
    • The scene towards the end of the film where Heidi is about to be attacked by a horde of rats
    • The brown goat that attacks the old grey goat at the beginning.
    • The bird-of-prey that tries to attack Spritz.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: The song "She's a Nothing" features surreal animation where Rottenheimer, Sebastian, and Schnoodle turn into monsters. However, at least one viewer has pointed out that the way Rottenheimer and Sebastian belittle Heidi by telling her she's small and "a nothing" is the most chilling part, because it feels similar to the tactics that bullies in real life use.
  • Special Effect Failure: At the end of "She's a Nothing," Sebastian does an Evil Laugh, but his face remains completely still. It's as if the animators weren't informed about the laugh.
