YMMV / Heaven Is for Real

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Colton really see heaven, does he believe he saw heaven, or is he just making everything up just to get attention from his family. Interestingly enough the film seems to suggest the latter to be true. This shown in shots focusing on him he is usually left alone while his parents focus on something to do with religion (ie: his mother leading a church choir while he plays in the hallway by himself, his parents bringing him along to the hospital just to leave him in the hall as his father gives last rites to a dying man, etc). So it wouldn't be a stretch to suggest that he made this religious stuff up and parroting everything he has ever been told just for his father to give him some attention as he does give him a lot of that after claiming to have been to heaven.
  • Narm: Thomas Haden Church was really phoning in his performance.
  • Strawman Has a Point: A lot of people state more logical reasons for the boy's "memories of heaven", such as studies that state the person just sees what they want to see to him just parroting everything he has seen or been told. However the movie doesn't even try to debate them, we are just meant to believe these people are wrong because the father fully believes what his four year old son says to be true.
