- Awesome Music: John Williams did the score, so it's a guarantee. Here's a sample of the most awesome moments of the soundtrack. Varèse Sarabande released it on CD decades later.
- Base-Breaking Character: Catskil. His jokes are either So Unfunny, It's Funny or make the movie far more painful than it needs to be. A number of viewers split the difference, finding him unbearable to watch, but the "He was set to low-powered jokes" gag worth the pain.
- Retroactive Recognition: Calvin is played by Christopher Guest.
- Sweetness Aversion: A common criticism of the film. There are hints that it was originally intended to be more satirical in nature, which would help explain why Andy Kaufman agreed to sign on (though he was moved enough by the script he read that he wept at the end), but between studio-mandated rewrites and the director's handling of the film, the end product was much less subversive and instead infused with too much straightforward sentimentality.
