YMMV / Hawkwind

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Compared to their progressive rock peers, they were never able to make a real breakthrough in America, lacking consistent distribution despite attracting a cult following. They've also made relatively few live visits to the country since the '70s. Blue Öyster Cult and Rush ended up filling Hawkwind's niche as sci-fi-inspired hard rock bands in North America. Stateside, they're best remembered as "that band Lemmy was in before he started Motörhead."
  • Awesome Music: Space Ritual, start to finish. This live album encapsulates everything that made Hawkwind great, from trippy artwork to blistering guitar work, pounding rhythms and spacy electronics, and shows why they were a top concert attraction in their prime.
  • Crazy Is Cool: American chanteuse Lene Lovich was with them for a while as singer; the kooky American, best known for her hit single "Lucky Number", fit in well. note
  • Refrain from Assuming: "Psychedelic Warlords" is not called "Disappear in Smoke", regardless of what the chorus wants you to think.
