YMMV / Hawk and Dove

Go To

  • Replacement Scrappy:
    • Holly Granger (as the third person to bear the title of "Hawk") got this reception by fans, though it didn't help matters that writers had no clue what kind of personality she had, or bothered to flesh out a personality or backstory for her to begin with. Being retconned in as "only child" Dawn Granger's sister and an usurper of Hank Hall's Hawk powers only rubbed the salt in further for her hatedom. They rejoiced as Hank Hall was eventually brought back to life while Holly was killed off, and she appears to no longer exist at all in the New 52 continuity.
    • Before Holly, there was the second duo to call themselves Hawk and Dove. These two had very little connection to the originals or Dawn Granger, and were gotten rid of and never spoken of again.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Much of the reason the original run didn't last long was that neither Hawk nor Dove came across as very likeable, in large part due to Creative Differences between Steve Skeates and Steve Ditko. For the most part, the two leads ended up being less like honest portrayals of real-world issues and more like negative caricatures, with Hawk being an aggressive asshole and Dove being an ineffectual wimp. Towards the end, the brothers did get Character Development with Hank becoming more understanding of Don’s perspective and Don becoming the brains of the duo with investigative abilities. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to save the series.
