YMMV / Harvey Beaks

Go To

  • Adorkable: Harvey, Irving, Claire, Dade (in his more sympathetic moments) and Piri Piri.
  • Awesome Art: The show is just loaded with gorgeous watercolor backgrounds.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Princess. You either think she's hilarious or one of the most obnoxious characters in the show.
    • Kratz is an interesting case. On 4Chan, he gets The Scrappy treatment because they generally find him "too boring" yet a good portion of the fanbase sees him as a Woobie who could use a big hug.
  • Cult Classic: Despite its short run, the show has amassed a decently-sized fanbase (not as big as a show as praised as it is often has, but not tiny) for its down-to-earth plotlines, likable characters, and more laid-back tone, especially in comparison to the more surreal and wacky shows that were on around the same time as it such as Spongebob Squarepants and Breadwinners.
  • Designated Villain:
    • The Spirit of the Lake just wants to make everyone happy in the lake and make reasonable actions like not letting Harvey be banned since he never caused problems. But the episode he aired in sees him as this for that reason.
    • Randl is probably the most notable example yet. He may also double as a Jerkass Woobie, considering he has a senile mother and shop vandals to deal with.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Some people like to headcanon Harvey as autistic, given his strange but friendly personality, Neat Freak tendencies and dislike of change.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Dade is slowly gaining popularity. It helps his personality is the most developed of the secondary characters.
    • Doctor Roberts is also pretty much a fan favorite.
    • Piri Piri and Claire are definite fan favorites.
  • Friendly Fandoms: There are surprisingly a sizable amount of Harvey Beaks fans who are also fans of the much more reviled Nicktoon Breadwinners and vice versa. You can look up some Breadwinners/Harvey Beaks crossovers on DeviantArt.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: There would later be another bird Beaks who got his last name in order to avoid a trademark dispute with the social media industry.
  • Ho Yay: Dade cares a little too much about Harvey.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Dade. On one hand, he's a very bossy, grumpy, bitter, rude and hot-tempered "tattlepants" who is extremely jealous of Fee and Foo. In one scene in "Old Fashion Dade", he considers poisoning them so he could have Harvey to himself (though he actually wound up manipulating them to get them kicked out of the festival by breaking a ride). On the other hand, Dade is deeply concerned over Harvey's safety and even used to be his closest friend until the imps came along and ruined it for him. Seeing him break down in tears in "Harvey's First Scar" is much Harsher in Hindsight when you find out his past friendship with Harvey in "Old Fashioned Dade". He's also had an unwanted sugar rush forced upon him by Foo in "Nightclub Night". To contrast his irritable and neurotic personality, he looks like a fluffy, pudgy, cuddly bunny. That being said, Dade deserves a big hug despite being a bit of a jerk. The episode "Wade Is Cooler Than Dade" shoves him even deeper into Woobie territory when his little brother tricks him into embarrassing himself and insulting his friends.
    • Randl also may fit the bill since he has to deal with his senile mother and people who steal his bikes and vandalize his shop. Of course, those were part of Harvey's attempt to Dare to Be Badass, but even then.
    • Princess is meaner and more obnoxious than Dade and Randl combined but you can't help but pity her in "Princess Is Better Than You" when it's revealed she only has crystals to play with and actually teared up when Claire gave her an actual doll as a gift.
    • Fee and Foo are beginning to look like one of these, considering their obnoxious and troublemaking attitudes. They were more than happy to throw Kratz under the bus in "Someone's Stealing My Stuff" and Fee was horribly racist towards a ghost in "The Ghost Problem," but you can still feel sorry for the two when they're being ostracized by the other kids.
    • Moff of all characters got this treatment in the Steampunks special where he played to role of Big Bad simply because he missed his old friendship with Irving.
    • Blister from "The Blister", "Hug Life", and "Later, Dingus". Basically, he's a Grumpy Old Man who has developed agoraphobia that bonds with Fee in his appearances. Guess what happens in his third and final appearance in the series?
  • Moe: Piri Piri, Harvey, Dade, Claire, the list goes on and on.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The ending of "The New Bugaboo" scared a number of viewers, with Michelle's evil stare and the ominous background music.
    • Harvey's RAGE in "Pe-Choo", all because he wants to be banned like Fee and Foo.
  • Toy Ship: Plenty, but Claire/Foo and Harvey/Piri Piri are the most obvious ones.
  • Ugly Cute: Most of the more grotesque or monstrous-looking characters, such as the Blargus from the Halloween Episodes
  • Visual Effects of Awesome:
    • The parade near the end of "A Day of No To-Do" is absolutely stunning!
    • There's also the Animesque sequence in "Buds Before Studs".
  • Win Back the Crowd: The series has received many positive reviews among older Nickelodeon fans, a surprise given that other previous series have gained very divisive receptions. Helps that C.H. himself stated in interviews that the show is meant to have a laid-back feeling more akin to the likes of shows like Rugrats and Hey Arnold!, and that he straight-up told the network that it wouldn't be like those previously mentioned hated shows.
  • The Woobie:
    • Harvey. It's easy to feel sorry for him in quite a few episodes.
    • Both Fee and Foo in "The Negatives of Being Positively Charged". Heck, Fee and Foo in general, in a way. Yeah, their reputation as trouble-makers is the main reason why they don't have a lot of fans, they're still both genuine friends to Harvey. It's sometimes a little sad to see that the only people to really treat them decently on a regular basis are Harvey and his parents.
    • Kratz is headed in this direction, considering at the end of "Someone's Stealing My Stuff", the kids left him tied to a tree. Since then he's been getting the occasional Butt-Monkey treatment.
    • Claire in "Princess Is Better Than You". She pours her heart out in the competition so she can finally have some sort of victory, only to have it snatched away from her because Dr. Roberts never intended for anyone other than Princess to win. Even Princess feels bad for her in the end.
    • Technobear is headed in this direction with his identity crisis in "Terrybear" and finding out that he's adopted.
