YMMV / Haru and Midori

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: How close were Midori and Tsugumi? On the one hand, Midori doesn't think they were all that close, since Tsugumi was nice to everyone, and this fact is supported by how Tsugumi didn't keep in touch with her. On the other hand, Tsugumi kept Midori's contact information and often talked about Midori with her daughter Haru, suggesting that Midori might have been special to Tsugumi.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Some people believe that Midori is on the autism spectrum, considering her extreme difficulty with interacting with others and her dependence on her mother well into adulthood.
  • No Yay: Unsurprisingly, more than a few people are turned off by the idea of a 31-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl falling in love. Others are more willing to reserve judgment, and suggest that while there will be a pairing, it won't necessarily be Midori/Haru. In the end, Haru and Midori's relationship remains entirely platonic.
  • Stoic Woobie: Haru loses her mother, hears people badmouthing said mother after she's dead, and is left without any relatives who are willing and able to take care of her. Despite that, she never shows how much it affects her.
  • Values Dissonance: At Tsugumi's funeral, her relatives' refuse to take in the now orphaned Haru, although Yayoi says she would help if not for the fact that she has two children and can't feasibly take in another, a situation that eventually changes once her children move out. This comes off as heartless from a Western perspective, but it does fit with Japanese attitudes on adoption.
