• Accidental Innuendo: As an old man explains at the beginning of the game, the player makes the creatures of Happyland follow them by touching them, which sounds much more sinister than intended to an adult than an innocent child.
• Cult Classic: It's not nearly as well-known as Icy Tower, but is remembered fondly by those who grew up playing it in the late 1990s–early 2000s.
• Funny Moments:
  • It's rather Black Comedy, but the old man at the beginning of the final level of the X-mas Edition—"Tops of Terror 3"—says, "Make sure you do not fall into this chasm. It will probably hurt you.", as if he's not entirely certain that falling into what's essentially a Bottomless Pit will kill the Player Character. No points for guessing what happens if you try to confirm his suspicion.
  • The ending of the X-mas Edition. Santa says he should reward the dog for Saving Christmas, and exits the screen to the right. A few seconds later, and a giant present with the words "MERRY XMAS" falls on top of the dog, who lets out the same sound he makes when the player gets a Game Over.
• Scrappy Mechanic:
  • Dying causes all items in a level to respawn. This is usually a good thing, as it lets the player potentially get a life back^How?By collecting 250 items. However, in the X-mas Edition, most levels have five blue spheres which are used to unlock a password after completing the level, so if the player dies, they have to collect the spheres all over again.
  • Similarly, if the player saves all the Happylanders in a level, all enemies will turn into gold coins, which unlocks a bonusroom after completing the level if the player collects them all. However, if the player turns the enemies into coins, but dies before they reach the exit (usually by touching spikes), then all the items will respawn... except the gold coins, locking the player out of the bonusroom for that level.
• That One Level: "Manic Mines 2" is generally considered to be the most difficult level in the X-mas Edition besides the final level. The player must guide twenty-four Happylanders to safety to unlock the exit, much of the ground is covered in black ice^DefinitionA thin, transparent layer of ice that is all but invisible to the naked eye, and at the bottom of the level is a massive spike pit, and the only way to get across it is to jump across many narrow, icy platforms. A saving grace is that the player can jump straight up while sliding on ice to regain control, which no old man explains.
• Ugly Cute: The Happylanders can fall into this territory. When YouTuber Kai Horton reviewed the X-mas Edition in 2022, he described them as "weird, tiny creatures that look much more monstrous than the animals you're supposed to be avoiding".
