- Ensemble Dark Horse: Memaw, the lovably snarky and sweet old lady who serves as a mother figure to Leonard, is universally beloved by the fan base.
- Like You Would Really Do It: Like they would really kill off Leonard in the first season finale. The fact there's so much more material to adapt, and the show isn't called Hap should be a pretty good indicator he'll be fine.
- Nightmare Fuel: Season 2's premise follows a Hap and Leonard trying to find who has been murdering children in the town.
- Me-Maw's backstory involving her father being lynched and her church with her family inside being burned down. ON THE SAME DAY!
- In the third season, when Brown and his fellow KKK goons nearly cut off Leonard's testicles after he and Hap have been beaten up in Grovetown. It's extremely upsetting. Thankfully, Hap and Leonard are both rescued before they suffer any further physical trauma.
