- Ho Yay: By the middle of the book people are making mocking comments on how they "should get engaged". Fletcher also tends to go on a lot about how charismatic and magnetic and generally attractive Red is.
- Tear Jerker: In the end, Gregor Devereux may have been exposed for his crimes, but the price is his Broken Pedestal for May. She lost her mother, and now her father in a way. Fletcher even admits that the whole mess made him consider quitting detective work.
