YMMV / Gus Johnson

Go To

  • Awesome Music: i wanna live in a skyrim house
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • "talk show soldier surprise" plays like one of those talk shows where a deployed soldier surprises his wife with a visit on live television. However, it turns out that the soldier who appears on stage (played by Gus) is actually delivering news that her husband died in the line of duty.
    • "baby reveal party" has Gus and a "pregnant" Sabrina reveal their baby's gender with pink balloons, then reveal their baby's future birth defect in a similar fashion. The answer, "cankles", causes Sabrina to break down crying.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • "jk rowling these days" begins with Rowling dubiously claiming that Hagrid was transgender. After she revealed herself as an outspoken TERF — as acknowledged in the more recent "jk rowling's publicist every day" — it seems impossible to imagine her boasting about creating a transgender character.
    • The aforementioned "baby reveal party," was already a bit of a dark joke, but after the controversy with Gus's ex-girlfriend (who is also in the video) it becomes nearly unwatchable.
  • Nightmare Fuel: He made a couple horror short films in his early days. "Gone For The Weekend" has a pretty good Jump Scare, and "Theodore" features a pretty creepy Killer Teddy Bear.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Gus's image took a hit after it came to light that he was neglectful and abusive towards his then girlfriend (now ex) during and while she was recovering from a difficult medical procedure. While he has maintained an online presence and uploads regularly his channel growth has largely stagnated and none of his recent videos have received nearly the number of views as they did during the height of his popularity. More crucially, several of his former friends and collaborators have distanced themselves, likely permanently, and his stand-up tour was cancelled.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • "Hey Jack" is a heart-rending song about divorced parents assuring their son they still love him.
    • The ending of Working Man is pretty sad since the Working Man finally finds a place where he belongs.
    • His video where he celebrates hitting 1 million YouTube subscribers involves an incredibly heartfelt "thank you" to all that helped him achieve this feat.
    • His "god awful country" video is pretty lighthearted for the most part, but there is one sad bit where Gus is hiding from his mom in the tall grass, but then realizes that his cat was buried nearby. He then quickly states he doesn't want to be near that spot.
