YMMV / GunBuster

Go To

  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The series is well-known for having multiple breast shots as well as scenes of full nudity, gaining the nickname "Bustgunner" in anime circles.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The ending is meant to be a Bittersweet Ending as It takes Noriko and Kazumi 12000 years to reach the Earth again after performing a Heroic Sacrifice to destroy the alien fleet, but humanity is at least shown to still be alive with their "Welcome Home" message to the pair. But the sheer length of time that's passed will mean the Earth, and likely humanity itself, will be completely unrecognizable for the two. Noriko can't even recognize the Earth's continents anymore, suggesting Okinawa was flooded. Noriko and Kazumi were experiencing heartsickness and technology shock after mere decades in space, making it hard to see how they'll manage to cope with the effects of 12000 years.
  • Fan Nickname: "Bustgunner" for the series proper, because of all the bouncing. Jung Freud also gets the nickname "Juggs" because of this.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: During the transformation sequence, an axe and baseball bat can be seen racked up inside Gunbuster, but Noriko and Kazumi never use them, despite some Gunbuster figures including them. However, in the Super Robot Wars series, two additional attacks were added to Gunbuster, Buster Tomahawk and Buster Homerun, specifically to allow them to use them, with Noriko and Kazumi Lampshade Hanging that they're using equipment that they otherwise never use.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The series' exploration of Time Dilation becomes steadily more nightmarish as the story progresses. Noriko's best/only friend is the same age as her in first episode, by the last episode that same friend has a daughter graduating high school, and Noriko has only aged a couple years at most. Directly noted by Noriko when she realizes that this is why father always returned for her birthday; he didn't want to literally miss his daughter growing up. It reaches its peak with the ending, where Noriko and Kazumi get stranded in space for the equivalent of 12000 years. The Earth is near totally unrecognizable when they return and Okinawa seems to have been completely flooded.
  • Superlative Dubbing: Discotek and the people at Sound Cadence Studios put their all into producing a high quality English dub that did the series justice, and it's gotten great reception among fans, with special mention going to Kiane Chula King, a complete newcomer, taking the role of Noriko and making it her own while putting her own unique spin on it.
  • The Woobie: Noriko early on, after she gets selected for the space mission. Poor Noriko - little to no self-esteem to begin with - suffers so much social abuse that she has a short breakdown not long after and ends up begging the Coach to rescind her selection... And this makes the sheer badass later on so much more satisfying.
