YMMV / Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • Courtesy of Quill's Awesome Mix tapes, we get music from Parliament, Steppenwolf, The Jackson 5, The Edgar Winters Group, Pat Benatar, and Elvis Presley.
    • "Monsters After Dark" in the Halloween variant is a major head banger and fits perfectly with the chaotic scenario.
  • Contested Sequel: To The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. On the one hand, fans of "Mission Breakout" appreciate how it replaced a lower-budget duplicate of a Walt Disney World ride with something more unique, has some pretty Awesome Music, and allows the ride to stand out from the other versions. Fans of "Tower of Terror" feel that "Mission Breakout" is a Replacement Scrappy of a Cult Classic ride that fails to be as atmospheric as "Tower of Terror" and the cutscenes of the Guardians break up the flow of the ride.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In the regular version, Rocket uses the guests to get security clearance. In "Monsters After Dark", he using them as a tasty distraction for the monsters. He's not even subtle about it.
Rocket: Remember, if you see a scary creature, scream real loud, and look delicious.
  • Even Better Sequel: The "Monsters After Dark" variant. Many fans have called it a much more worthy successor to "Tower of Terror" and fits in better with the elevator motif, being the best of both worlds: A horror-comedy ride and a Marvel property, with some wishing at the least the variant would play year round during the night hours or they would change the main ride's story to capitalize on it more.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The queue features a bookend resembling Frog Thor, a likely unwitting Early-Bird Cameo several years before the character would actually make his MCU debut in Loki.
  • Memetic Mutation: A video of a Californian reporter riding for the first time and absolutely losing it went viral on opening weekend.
  • Older Than They Think: This isn't the first time a themed attraction loved by so many people at a high end theme park got replaced with a different series, and then became Overshadowed by Controversy at opening. In fact, about less than a decade ago this was the case with rival theme park Universal Studios' Back to the Future: The Ride and The Simpsons Ride. If anyone didn't get to experience what fans of the former Universal ride felt at the time of its closing, they probably did now. Though, only time will tell if the controversy will die down over the years.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: It's pretty much impossible to discuss the ride without mentioning the outrage that came from the fact that it replaced The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, one of Disney's most beloved rides.
  • Replacement Scrappy: As with any new ride that replaces an old classic, especially since some people are accusing Disney of making it only because they wanted a Marvel-based ride to compete with Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure Superhero Island area. (Which, to be fair, is an unreasonable claim, since there's literally an entire country separating both parks...) This reaction mostly applies to fans as many critics feel the ride is great and a worthy successor.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: As soon as it was announced that the Tower of Terror was being replaced, people immediately began protesting.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A general criticism in the "Monsters After Dark" rendition is that, despite the story stating monsters are unleashed through the building, it's pretty much implied and you only see one during the ride itself. Many have stated the ride would've worked more if there was more than one monster.
