YMMV / Grown Ups

Go To

  • Critic-Proof: While most critics hated both films (10% for the first and 7% for the second on Rotten Tomatoes), both were also commercial successes, the first grossing $271 million worldwide while the second grossed $247 million, each on a $80 million budget.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: After Lenny defends Keithie from a bully, the bully tells him that he's dead. This of course ages poorly due to his actor, Cameron Boyce, passing away at such a young age.
  • Ho Yay: Plenty between the Kappa Beta Sigma fraternity as they can be quite friendly and touchy with one another in Grown Ups 2.
  • Humor Dissonance: A large chunk of this movie consists of one character making a joke and everyone else laughing like it's hysterical, even though they're really nothing special at best.
  • Poor Man's Substitute: General consensus is that Kevin James is no match for Chris Farley, with the scene where his character falls down the edge of the lake in particular being held as an example of where Farley's talent for slapstick would have made it funnier.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Keithie's actor Cameron Boyce would later gain wider recognition for his acting career on Disney Channel starting with Jessie.
  • Special Effect Failure: The deer in the second movie is far from convincing.
  • Squick:
    • Kurt's mother-in-law's toe deformity.
    • Lenny cooking bacon on the bugzapper.
    • Rob gets Coach Buzzer's ashes all over their fried chicken - which Eric eats anyway.
  • Sweetness Aversion: Some of the stuff involving Lenny's daughter. Her whole speech about wanting to find heaven on the GPS so her dad can see his old coach was so cute it made Film Brain barf.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Lenny learning from his daughter Becky that coach died.
    • Becky being hurt after her mother Roxanne accidentally let slip that there is no Tooth Fairy.
    • Rob getting very choked up while spreading coach's cremated ashes around at the lake. Not just upset about coach's passing but also about being a terrible absent father to his kids.
    • A Meta one, as Adam Sandler has said with these films letting him hang out with all his old friends, he really wishes Chris Farley was still alive to be part of them.
  • Toy Ship: Lenny's son, Keithie, and Eric's daughter, Donna.
