YMMV / Graveyard School

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Morton from "Don't Tell Mummy." Despite the relative obscurity of this series, it seems as though Morton left enough of a recognizable mark that she acquired a few fans.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The father and son being reunited in Row Your Boat.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: So Here Comes Santa Claws is about a kid who acts like an asshole during Christmas, and is suddenly being stalked by what can only be described as a demonic Santa and his monstrous minions, only the kid decides to not go down without a fight which leads to An Asskicking Christmas. No, we're not talking about Krampus at all.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Ari Spinner from the last book. None of the kids know where she came from, and no one really cares to know because she's shown zero interest in making friends. She's practically the only kid in the school who isn't afraid of the staff, and all anyone knows about her is she's obsessed with spiders. Then we find out she doesn't have parents and has been living in an old, run down home by herself for God knows how long, and she'd rather spend the rest of her life as a spider because she hates human beings that much. When she shows up at Mel's home in spider form, after he bluntly says they're not friends, there's a bit of disappointment in the way Ari says "We were never friends, were we?" Which means she thought Mel was her friend, and his rejection is what pushes her into wanting to embrace her new body permanently, exclaiming "I knew I hated humans for a reason." This doesn't justify her crossing the Moral Event Horizon when she kidnaps Park and a few others so she can eat them, but one has to wonder just what happened to this girl's life that she'd rather be a spider than anything else.
  • Moment of Awesome: Despite the fact that Kyle pretty much brought the events of Here Comes Santa Claws on himself by being a brat for unjustified reasons, he deserves some props for absolutely refusing to go down without a fight when he and Park are cornered by hordes of sentient, giant rodents, to the point that he shoved the Christmas tree into the fireplace when they needed to block it. There was also him earlier attacking the figure coming down the chimney with a poker, though it's still unclear if that was actually Santa Claus or not.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Dr. Morthouse was never exactly a good character, but for most of the series she only lurked in the background and issued threats to keep the students in line. Then came Creature Teacher where she kept substitute teacher Ms. King trapped in a cage in the school basement and replaced her with a shapeshifting chameleon as part of her "Retraining program." All because Ms. King allowed her students to laugh in class.
    • Fang crossed it in Escape from Vampire Park after it's revealed the vampire in the Tunnel of Blood is being held there against his will, ever since Fang found and kidnapped him to use him in the attraction. What makes this so loathsome is because Camp Dracula and Little School of Horrors both showed that vampires in the Graveyard School universe are the same as regular people, even if they need to drink blood and have powers, and there's no indication the vampire ever hurt or did anything to anyone to deserve this treatment.
  • Narm Charm: Vickie Wheilson doesn't understand the word "subtle" when it comes to her clothes, and just about every time she's described she's wearing neon colors of every variety. Ridiculous, but also fitting of her being a skater girl of the 90s and one of the reasons why readers actually love her.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Jaws' kidnapping in Don't Eat The Mystery Meat! Ms. Stoker lured Jaws into her car under the false notions of helping Jaws prank his parents by faking his disappearance. She then keeps him locked inside her basement, distracting him with a fully stocked entertainment system with all the free food he wants, and is obviously planning to use him for her next lunch recipe. The entire situation feels all too similar to a real life case of a child being abducted by a serial killer or child molester, and even worse, Jaws never realizes what's going until he gets saved by Park and Stacey. Ms. Stoker then tries to run them down with her car when the three get away. She also escapes punishment, moving to another town where pets have started going missing...
    • Marc Foster's nightmare in Slime Lake, where it's described in grotesque detail how the slime from the titular lake has melted the flesh on his shoulder down to the bone, followed by his sister Terri limping into the room with a skeletal leg before Marc wakes up.
