  • Heartwarming Moments: Will is fully supportive of Leonard's sexuality, even loudly proclaiming it in church before God to show Leonard that he is loved and accepted. When Mrs. Chapman is distraught at the thought that Leonard won't be allowed into Heaven, Will gently retorts that if someone as goodhearted as Leonard can't make it into Heaven then it would mean Heaven is an empty place.
  • Moral Event Horizon: The Archdeacon crosses it by not just transferring Sam to a different parrish to protect him but also trying to convince Leonard to help him remove Sidney at his weakest point. Broken Pedestal, indeed.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Leonard is played by Al Weaver, who would go on to be the voice of Rex in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: A lot of people saw Sidney's feelings for Amanda as this.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Sidney's and Amanda's relationship stretched back for years before the series started and spans several seasons before finally running its course by the end of season 3, when he is unable to bring himself to leave the church for her. By contrast, Sidney is willing to leave England and face the USA's anti-miscegenation laws to be with Violet one episode after meeting her. Emphasis is placed on his desire to create positive change through the Civil Rights movement, but it is still an obvious case of Real Life Writes the Plot since James Norton was leaving the series.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Leonard attempting suicide because he can't live with being gay and feeling that makes him a bad person. Gary being executed for "murder" after accidentally killing his friend by helping her have an abortion via ingesting toxins after she begged him to is also sure to bring out the waterworks.
    • Mrs. Chapman realizes Leonard is gay and this shatters their relationship. She's distraught because she believes homosexuality it a sin and that it will damn Leonard to Hell. He, meanwhile, begs and pleads for her to come back — eventually agreeing to go deeper into the closet by keeping Daniel, his lover, away from the vicarage — because he needs her back in his life.
    • In Series 6, Geordie's long-buried trauma as a POW during the Second World War bursts out and he tearfully reveals that he was one of two prisoners remaining after the rest had been executed and he begged God for his friend to die so that he may live another day. Ultimately, the camp was assaulted and the two were both rescued, but Geordie held immense guilt over his self-perceived cowardice.
  • The Woobie: Leonard, as of episode 5 of Series 6. The episode starts with his being fired, and for him it only goes downhill from there.
