YMMV / Gotham by Gaslight

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Commissioner (later Mayor) Tolliver spends both stories being a stiff-necked Glory Hound, but there's little satisfying about watching him quake in terror after being kidnapped and vainly beg LeRoi not to kill dozens of Tolliver's citizens before being killed himself.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Here, Batman goes after Jack the Ripper, one of the most infamous serial killers of all time who escaped justice. 33 years later in The Batman (2022), Batman goes after the Riddler, who has been reimagined as a fictionalized Zodiac Killer, the other notorious serial killer who was never caught.
  • It Was His Sled: Jack the Ripper is Jacob Packer, a former friend of Martha Wayne.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Jacob Packer crossed it before the story even began, hiring a highwayman to kill Bruce's parents because the boy's mother spurned his advances.
  • Signature Scene: Batman confronting Jack the Ripper in the alleyway, which is often redrawn by other artists for fun for seemingly no other reason than being one of the most Batman scenes ever.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: An Elseworld version of the Joker is mentioned, but the character himself never actually appears (apart from a photo) and has no impact on the story. Later, in Infinite Crisis, the Joker of this timeline appeared as a fat, ugly, non-steampunk version. Fans were pretty pissed and it's not something they like to discuss. Convergence: Shazam! would later retcon this and introduce a more traditional Joker design. However, even then, he only appears in a single panel with the other rogues, remaining underutilized.
