  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Fans of the novel were unimpressed when the drama was first announced, especially because neither of the lead actors were well-known, and everyone expected it to be just another of the many Chinese period dramas that fall into obscurity within months. Instead the drama became wildly popular.
  • Awesome Music:
  • Fan Nickname: "Murder Puppy" has been spotted on Tumblr as a nickname for Cheng Yin.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Novoland: Eagle Flag, since the series are the same genre and have a similar tone (and also share an actor: Shawn Wei plays Gu Jian here and Baili Ning Qing in Eagle Flag).
  • Ho Yay: Li Cheng Ye and Li Yan are unusually close for cousins, and are almost always together. Li Yan even strokes Cheng Ye's shoulders when he adjusts his clothes. And Li Yan's death triggers Cheng Ye's Villainous Breakdown.
  • Love to Hate: Cheng Yin. He's utterly despicable, yet is also sympathetic and entertaining enough to avoid being completely loathed.
  • Narm: After she kills herself Xiao Feng's body spins around several times before falling. Unfortunately it looks silly and out-of-place in such a tragic scene.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Zhu Zan Jin (who would become well-known for playing Jin Guangyao a few months later) has a minor role as Zhao Shi Xuan.
  • The Woobie: Xiao Feng. In the space of a few hours her grandfather's home is attacked, her friends and family are killed, and she sees her grandfather beheaded by her husband.
