YMMV / Godzilla vs. Koopzilla (2014)

Go To

  • Evil Is Cool:
    • Bowser may be a power-hungry king, but seeing him become an Anti-Hero and fight off the King of the Monsters himself and eventually destroy him is awesome to see. It is also pretty cool seeing him in his Giga Bowser form.
    • Godzilla also fits this pretty well, being the iconic destructive monster who poses a great threat against Bowser, Mario, and everyone else. His fights against the heroes are really cool to watch.
  • First Installment Wins: It seems to be a popular opinion that the first version of Godzilla vs Koopzilla was the better of the two versions that are currently out, even if most people still seem to like the director's cut for being different.
  • Fridge Horror: All of the buildings we see Godzilla destroy throughout the movie. How many people were in them? If not, how many people were around the buildings when they were destroyed?
  • Funny Moments:
    • Mario trying to awaken Luigi to tell him his plans for the day. As Luigi continues to snore away, Mario becomes increasingly agitated with his brother. So what does Mario do to get him up? Jump onto his stomach, feet first. This results in Luigi waking up, yelling in pain, and jumping into the ceiling. It gets funnier when Luigi decides to immediately go back to bed after this.
    • The only way Mario manages to get Luigi out of bed? Telling his brother that Peach wouldn't invite them over for his favorite cannelloni dish. This leads to Luigi bolting out of bed, grabbing Mario, and making a dash toward Peach's castle. When they get there, Mario tumbles into the throne room as Luigi throws him in.
    • Jeff, Hal, and Steve in general. Shouldn't be too much of a surprise though given the series they originated from. Jeff and Hal clearly are annoyed by the entire fact that Bowser sent them out on another task, despite having failed him multiple times in the past. They are also annoyed by the entire fact that Steve was sent out to go with them too given that they find him annoying, but they cannot really do much given that they need him for their task to spy on Mario. Watching this Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing interaction is pretty entertaining.
      • Steve appears behind Hal to say hi, causing him to jump into the air in shock, only to come crashing back down and destroy the ground beneath him.
      • Steve, Jeff, and Hal's reaction to the Super Sushi is also pretty hilarious, as they dash out of the castle as soon as possible and begin talking about their next move...with Steve suggesting that their best option is to run away as fast as possible, resulting in Hal giving a Facepalm.
      • After Bowser orders them to go find the Super Sushi and destroy it, Jeff refers to both Steve and Hal as "stupid dogs", to which Hal responds by reminding him that he isn't a dog. Jeff responds with a Big "SHUT UP!" before ordering him to get into the pipe. As Hal does this, he annoyingly hums a military song and salutes Bowser.
    • When Yoshi asks Mario what he plans on doing with the Super Sushi besides beating Bowser, Mario literally states he plans on using it as spaghetti sauce, leaving the green dinosaur with a Jaw Drop.
      • It becomes funnier when Luigi criticizes his brother for not being able to keep his mind off of food, which is kind of ironic when the only thing that got Luigi out of bed was cannelloni.
    • Bowser sitting in his castle, sneezing as soon as he gets the feeling somebody is talking about him. He looks back and forth, wondering if it was Peach, but then sighs knowing it was probably someone else. In reality, it was just Luigi, nobody he'd be happy about.
    • Mario and E. Gadd randomly bumping into each other's heads. It comes right out of nowhere, but it is still kinda goofy.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Steve's reaction to Hal and Jeff actually allowing him to help them for once. He seems so grateful to make use to them
    • Mario and Princess Peach's interaction while they gaze upon the city, as Princess Peach states that the city was quite beautiful, with Mario then assuring her that it isn't as pretty as her.
    • After E. Gadd blames himself for Godzilla's rampage, both Mario and Luigi comfort him by reminding him that he had no idea Godzilla would enter the Mushroom Kingdom, so it wasn't entirely his fault.
    • Godzilla's defeat. Just when it seemed that Godzilla had finally killed Bowser, Bowser would prove him wrong by piercing through him with his flames. With Godzilla defeated, the world has ultimately been saved, and Princess Peach cries in relief.
    • Bowser, despite previously being aggressive with his minions Hal and Jeff, does show his admiration for them helping him on this latest mission. He promises to make sure he will pay them fairly from now on as well.
    • Bowser decides to let Mario and Peach go, telling them that he is tired and needs a month of rest. This does show that Bowser does likely have some honor for Mario.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: As you can probably guess by the name of the trope, a lot of people watched the animation to see the King of the Monsters, Godzilla, fight Bowser.
  • Nightmare Fuel: While the film does have a fair share of awesome moments, some moments are just unnerving.
    • Godzilla in general fits into the category quite well, as the film depicts him as a massive reptilian monster who is nothing more than hellbent on destruction. He will just destroy until nothing else is in his way.
    • The literal first scene of the film shows Godzilla going on a rampage in Japan, crawling out from the ocean and tearing down several buildings with his sheer size and breath. When the military began firing on him, Godzilla just gives them a Death Glare before killing them all with his fiery breath, incinerating them. We should consider ourselves thankful this wasn't entirely onscreen.
    • Godzilla's first appearance in the Mushroom City is also pretty unnerving, as we actually get to see his destruction on a more detailed level. Godzilla's heat breath destroys an entire building, leaving only the top half, and his stomps shake the ground like an earthquake. We see what has to be dozens of innocent civilians running for their dear lives from the King of the Monsters, who really cannot do anything to fend themselves off from him.
    • Seeing footage of Godzilla's past rampages while J. Robert Oppenheimer's infamous speech plays onscreen is incredibly unnerving. The footage shows Godzilla destroying numerous buildings as the city burns, just showing how this version of the king of all monsters is nothing more than cruel and heartless monster who will destroy anything in his path.
    J. Robert Oppenheimer: Now I have become death, the destroyer of worlds. I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.
    • Godzilla stopping a train, only to then grab one of the cars with his mouth and play with it for a minute before tossing it into the side of a building, likely killing dozens in the process. It is almost like Godzilla is enjoying the carnage he brings.
    • Godzilla completely decimates Bowser's entire fleet with his breath, blowing up the smaller ships and crashing the massive cruiser into the city. Just shows how much of a threat Godzilla truly does pose, as he can wipe out entire armies with ease.
    • As awesome as Godzilla and Bowser's final fight is, their actions clearly have resulted in mass destruction around them, with multiple buildings being blown away. Mario points out that if their fighting doesn’t stop sooner rather than later, there would likely not be much of a city left to save.
    • Burning Godzilla's brutal beatdown of Giga Bowser, beating him to near death and to the point where he begins coughing up blood.
    • While the ending of the film is mostly happy given that Bowser won and Godzilla was defeated, the last thing we see is Godzilla lying on the bottom of the ocean…who opens his eye and it glows blue, indicating that the King of the Monsters is more likely than not ready for some revenge on the Koopa King.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Godzilla got a lot of this, despite being the film's Big Bad. A lot of fans seemed to cheer Godzilla on during his fight with Bowser and were genuinely disappointed when Bowser seemingly kills Godzilla at the end of the movie.
  • Special Effect Failure: While a majority of the film's animation is sprite animation that is for the most part rather decent, there are times when Bowser and Godzilla go from being 2D sprites to very obvious 3D models, which don’t quite have the same quality. While it is somewhat minor, it is still very hard to ignore whenever it happens.
  • Signature Scene: The final fight between Bowser and Godzilla was what everything in the film was building up to.
  • Tear Jerker: After Godzilla enters the portal created by the Portalgeist and begins reigning havoc across the Mushroom City, Professor E. Gadd begins to blame himself for what had happened, even though he had no idea this could happen. He created the Portalgeist and it allowed Godzilla to enter his dimension, and he now feels quite guilty that he may have more likely than not endangered the entire Mushroom Kingdom, and likely the rest of the world.
