YMMV / Godzilla: Singular Point

Go To

  • Adorkable: Mei Kamino is definitely this, especially when she half-asleep explains certain aspects of evolution.
  • Awesome Moments:
    • The entire first fight of the series between Jet Jaguar and Rodan. It's a seamless tug of war between the two with neither side having a clear advantage.
    • The reappearance of Anguirus at the end of episode 5 is just full of this, with him easily throwing out the plan to capture or kill him out with both his newfound size and force field, until Goro appears inside Jet Jaguar, pridefully telling his competitors how Jet Jaguar will end the problem as he and Anguirus stare each other down.
    • The scene where Godzilla Terrestris finally evolves into Godzilla Ultima is surely something to behold. It's a powerful scene, helped by the chanting rendition of the famous Godzilla March like in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) in addition to being a great Shout-Out to Shin Godzilla as well.
    • In the season finale of episode 13, we FINALLY have a brief, but true giant monster fight between Jet Jaguar PP (who is around the same height as Godzilla Ultima) and Godzilla Ultima, ending it with Jet Jaguar PP detonating the code and pulling off a Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Broken Base: The main discussion seems to focus in five points:
    1. In a Godzilla show, is there enough Godzilla screen time? As sub-points: is making him a beast with multiple transformative stages as in Shin Godzilla a good thing or bad and whether or not him being a walking quantum anomaly is asking too much of the audience's Willing Suspension of Disbelief, even by Godzilla standards?
    2. Are the Mythology Gags good or just an annoying tease?
    3. Is Jet Jaguar a Spotlight-Stealing Squad or not?
    4. Are the human characters interesting or not? In the Godzilla franchise this is a typical discussion, but one of the stronger points in the "not" camp is how a lot of their screen time involves them being mouthpieces for the plot detail discussed below.
    5. And last but definitely not least: in a genre that is not lacking in scenes where characters discuss scientific explanations, is this series an example of "too much science"?
  • Epileptic Trees: The Red Mist that appears alongside several Kaiju in the trailer has been the subject of fan speculation.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Jet Jaguar: Singular Point note
    • Fans were quick to call Godzilla "thicc" after his final design was revealed.
    • The reveal that despite his terrifying power and fearsome appearance Godzilla Ultima is only around 45 meters tall at first and is thus the smallest official Godzilla incarnation to date. Fans have run wild with the concept, drawing comics of the Monsterverse, Shin and Earth Godzillas making fun of the relatively-tiny Ultima.
    • Godzilla's design was widely praised for its more ferocious appearance and sinister style...until fans got a good look at what his face looks like from the front, which quickly led to memes poking fun at his eyes being too close together and his mouth too wide, along with jokes comparing him to a frog or and "evil Cookie Monster"note .
    • Fan animations tend to portray Godzilla as a Genius Bruiser that knows theoretical physics rather than his usual portrayal of a ferocious monster out to destroy everything like he's typically portrayed (while the show goes for the latter).
  • Replacement Scrappy: A number of fans were disappointed that some of the kaiju which seemed to be underused preexisting characters finally given a chance to shine again were actually new monsters that just happen to look extremely similar to old ones. Specifically, the red, sea-going monster with fins and antennae is not Titanosaurus and the green, ogre-like horned kaiju with large belly scales and bumpy skin is not Gabara, but "new" characters known as Godzilla Aquatilis and Salunga, respectively. This is especially unusual for Salunga, since Manda and Kumonga also have radically different designs but kept their names, but some reason Salunga, who looks almost the same as Gabara and even has Shock and Awe powers, making you wonder why they even bothered to make him a new character at all.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Salunga for some. While many were disappointed he wasn't Gabara, he won many over by being genuinely frightening and turning out to be an Implacable Man capable of shrugging off being iron maidened twice.
    • While Jet Jaguar has always had a strong cult following, he's one of the less popular monsters in the franchise with only a single film appearance and only a handful of other appearances. Many fans are offput by the fact he's an Ultraman Copy and his intentionally unattractive face design. However, this show has thrust him into the spotlight and by making the rest of his design as weird as his face, created a strangely cohesively odd design that has endeared him to fans new and old.
  • Special Effects Failure: While the CGI for the kaiju and Jet Jaguar is mostly effective, if not somewhat out of place due to them being painfully detailed compared to everything else and the choppy framerates at times, there are instances where it can look rather ropey.
    • When the Rodan that attacks the Otaki Factory crew in episode 2 roars, a close up of its mouth reveals that the outline doesn't extend to the inner row of teeth the creature possesses. The compositing for Goro when he’s inside the cockpit of Jet Jaguar also gets pretty spotty at times.
    • Salunga's appearance in episode 7 is among the weaker moments of the series in terms of its 3D animation, with its movement looking jarringly robotic and weightless the entire time.
    • When a flock of Rodan encounter Godzilla Ultima in episode 13, their flying pace is jarringly stiff and in a stunted manner while simultaneously losing their teeth.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: With its extremely complex and exposition-heavy plot involving such topics as quantum physics and time travel, one could be forgiven for thinking that they were watching an entry of the Science Adventure Series, but with kaiju. Singular;Point, as it were.
  • Tainted by the Preview: Some fans don't like Godzilla and Jet Jaguar's designs for the rather extreme proportions (Godzilla's huge legs and Jet Jaguar's... well, lack thereof), although others really like Godzilla's design for his rather demonic new design and find Jet Jaguar's design too goofy and endearing to hate. The feelings towards Jet Jaguar's design were improved when an early preview showed that Jet Jaguar wouldn't remain with the stubby legs for the entire series.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Anguirus’s death, especially for his fans who were happy to finally see his return. Made even more poignant by the fact that he’s the least aggressive monster in the series, behaves in a curious, playful and shy manner and only attacks in self-defense (initially, at least, before he learned that most humans would attack him anyway). There’s also an Epileptic Tree that, given his future-seeing, he knew his death was coming and made decisions that would lead to it anyway as a Thanatos Gambit to bring down Godzilla, making him the Token Heroic Kaiju of the series.
    • Jet Jaguar PP’s Heroic Sacrifice to stop Godzilla Ultima, he looks at his friends one last time before releasing the code that will stop Godzilla, all while knowing it won't come out alive of what comes next.
  • Unexpected Character: A very bizarre case. At first, fans were jumping for joy at what seemed to be the return of Titanosaurus and Gabara after years of neglect from Toho, along with some other returning kaiju like Jet Jaguar and Manda.. but, it turns out, the ones people thought were Titanosaurus and Gabara were actually new Kaiju. The one that looks like Titanosaurus is named Godzilla Aquatilis and is the first form of this incarnation of Godzilla, and the one that looks like Gabara is named Salunga. Fans were confused to say the least.
