YMMV / Godzilla: Rulers of Earth

Go To

  • Complete Monster:
    • Ongoing & Rulers of Earth: Gigan is a bloodthirsty sadist who is introduced specifically going after humans during his rampage through Hong Kong, using his buzzsaw implements to butcher entire buildings' of citizens. After joining with and being upgraded by the Cryogs, Gigan leads a brutal assault on Area 51 and Las Vegas, killing hundreds while singling out humans to vaporize. Gigan loves killing and fighting so much that he not only disregards orders from the Cryogs to fall back from his murder spree, but Gigan later betrays and slaughters almost the entire Cryog fleet just because he can.
    • Emperor Karkaro of the Cryog likes to present himself as a great warrior for his people, but in truth sacrificed them and his entire world when King Ghidorah attacked. Later arriving on Earth when his former commander Rhizon has been trying to conquer it, Karkaro seizes control of the invasion and deploys the monstrous Trilopods to devastate Earth's cities and kill countless people before having them try to drain the energy of Earth's Kaiju. Psychologically tormenting Rhizon, Karkaro has him imprisoned while vowing a torturous death when Rhizon calls him out for his cowardice and has Rhizon's innocent crew executed out of spite. Karkaro vows to wipe out all life on Earth and raze everything on the planet to ash solely to take it for himself and salve his ego, showing himself as the worst of all the aliens who threatens Earth.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: About half of the monster cast in this series are a buttload of obscured monsters who haven't been seen in years. The likes of which include Varan, Manda, Gezora, Jet-Jaguar, Titanosaurus, Biollante, Zilla (which this comic more or less repaired some of the damage his film did to Godzilla's legacy), and even the Gargantuas!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: There was a fan art of Godzilla using Anguirus as a flail. Guess what happens in issue 16.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Rhizon is the leader of the Cryog forces first seen on earth. A brilliant military leader who strategically uses the Kaiju to his advantage, Rhizon arranges for the annihilation of his rivals, the Devonians, by playing them and humanity against one another before stealing human identities to turn the nations against one another. Upon the arrival of the evil Emperor Karkaro, Rhizon resumes his bitter rivalry with him, even able to escape Karkaro's prison to kill his hated enemy while accepting his own impending end.
  • One-Scene Wonder: At long last after several minis and long comics IDW used the Showa King Ghidorah and with just one page he did what he always does: bring down a whole planet.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: This series went a long way towards winning Zilla (aka the 1998 American Godzilla, aka GINO) some fans. While it didn't make him popular enough for Toho to use in their mainstream films outside of cameos, it was certainly enough for him to no longer be the massive laughingstock that Final Wars made him out to be. He's even managed to make cameos in other comics with some meta commentary on his divisive reputation.
    • Also a more badass Jet Jaguar got a few more fans who missed out on his video game appearances.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Kingdom of Monsters was not well liked, Godzilla Ongoing was an improvement but it seems the third series is the one to really click and go past 12-13 issues without starting semi-anew.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Mothra shows up for the fight against Destroyah, then disappears and is eventually killed offscreen by Battra.
