- Gorn: One scene shows Gheorghe dismembering and skinning a stillborn lamb, another lingers on a dead calf. Work on an animal farm is not particularly a clean business.
- Spiritual Successor: My Summer of Love was the lesbian and 15-years-too-early version of God's Own Country, which is set in the same place and mixes the lesbian movie's story with that of Brokeback Mountain.
- Tear Jerker: "I don't want to be a fuck-up anymore." Which quickly turns into happy tears when Gheorghe accepts his Anguished Declaration of Love.
- Whole-Plot Reference: That movie is so much Brokeback Mountain it's not even funny. Two shepherds in remote surroundings, a rough sex scene, followed by a more gentle approach, lots of Scenery Porn, and the two guys don't quite manage to work out their relationship for a while and occasionally get violent towards each other. Not to mention that Alec Secareanu's Puppy-Dog Eyes can probably compete with Jake Gyllenhaal's. The main differences are that the sex is shown a lot more explicitly, there is no homophobia/hate crime drama about them, and they get a Happy Ending.
