YMMV / Giant Monster Gamera

Go To

  • Diagnosed by the Audience: There's something not quite right with Toshio. He seems to have a great deal of difficulty relating to other human beings, tends to fixate on things, lacks any real sense of self-preservation, and overall has a somewhat shaky grasp on reality. As a result, he has social problems at school, he's obsessed with turtles, he carries around a backpack full of rocks the size of his own head in order to "build a house for Gamera," he makes multiple attempts to get close to Gamera despite the obvious danger in doing so, and he continues to insist that "Gamera is a good turtle" despite the mounting property damage and human death toll resulting from the creature's actions.
  • It Was His Sled: Everybody with an ounce of pop cultural knowledge knows Gamera is a turtle who can fly, so the flying saucer twist comes as no surprise to modern viewers.
  • Memetic Mutation: Back in the early days of the internet Toshio's dub name "Kenny" became a term to describe any child in a Kaiju movie (probably in no small part thanks to the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode on the film). Partially due to the website Stomp Tokyo using it as such. Nowadays it's used as a catch-all term to describe prominently seen kids in all tokusatsu productions not just kaiju films.
  • The Scrappy: Toshio is generally disliked for his whiny attitude and personality, and his attempts to sabotage the military because he believes Gamera is a peaceful turtle due to him saving Toshio at the lighthouse, despite Gamera contradicting his pleas as he’s shown destroying the city!
  • So Okay, It's Average: For many Kaiju fans, the original Gamera is often considered a decent monster flick, and one of the better films inspired by Godzilla, but nowhere as interesting as its successors. Joel Hodgson of MST3K fame even acknowledged that it's a cut above most other films they watched.
