YMMV / Ghosts Of The Past

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Seeing the Scout flip off the Administrator after she'd continually berated him and his dead teammates.
  • He's Just Hiding: Despite BLU Scout's apparent death at the end of Episode 5, most viewers refuse to believe he is actually dead, particularly due to Konstatine's plan to write two more episodes.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Oh, so much.
    • "Once Upon a Time in 2fort":
      • Despite being a protagonist, the pleasure Scout takes in beating the Red Sniper to death is a little unsettling, even if the Sniper had been needlessly taunting the Scout beforehand.
      • The Mining Light Engineer's misaligned jaw (courtesy of the BLU Spy) and how he readjusts it.
      • Engineer's Cap Engineer's Cruel and Unusual Death, with his lower section completely obliterated by BLU Heavy's minigun. The sight is too grisly, even by TF2 standards; both Heavy and the BLU Medic are appropriately appalled.
      • EVERYTHING about the Red Pyro. As if the Last Breath combined with the Vintage Merryweather don't make him look intimidating, there's also the cold and ruthless demeanor he displays as he brutally murders his enemies. Not with flames, but with his axe and his bare hands. What's even worse is that unlike most Pyro's, whom see gumdrops, unicorns and rainbows, this Pyro is fully aware of the harm he's causing.
      • There's also the implications that the Pyro is a demon of some sort, what with the fire that erupts from his eyes and the way he gets back up on his feet.
      • The way he laughs as Heavy unleashes a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on him. While it's usually meant to exemplify how the Pyro has the mindset of a little kid, this one instance comes off similar to whenever the Joker laughs off a beating from Batman, and only further empathizes how malevolent this Pyro is.
      • The absolute brutality he unleashes onto the BLU Team. He shoved a trophy down Spy's throat, and ripped the Medic's head from his spine, and would have done god-knows-what to the Heavy if Scout hadn't stopped him.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • "Once Upon a Time in 2fort":
      • The Heavy's death. Just after the Scout sees the mutilated body of the Spy, Heavy simply says that he doesn't feel good. The Scout turns to his last surviving team mate, whose hand drops from his chest, revealing that he had been impaled moments before by the Red Pyro.
      • Essentially everything that happens after that scene. The Scout contemplating suicide, finishing the mission all by himself, and standing over his team's graves, giving one final salute.
      • Also a bit of a bittersweet one - at the end, the entire team has been replaced with new mercenaries - all except the Scout, who won't talk to anybody else, leaving the others to gesture and talk about him. He's surrounded by so many people, yet alone all the same.
    • "Ghosts of the Past":
      • The series premise is how the Scout is dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
      • In a side video that Konstantine created, the Scout is revealed to play Russian Roulette with himself - he loads the bullet, spins the barrel, and pulls the trigger once, then mark down the day on the calendar. After he leaves with the other mercs, the camera pans over many months of marked calendar pages. He's been doing this a very, very long time.
      • During a trauma-induced hallucination in Episode 2, the Scout finds himself face to face with the RED Pyro, daring Scout to try and kill him. Before Scout can act, his teammates from 2Fort appear and reassuredly motion Scout to come with them. At first, it seems Scout will overcome his desire for vengeance and join his friends, until RED Pyro cruelly taunts him by reliving the BLU Spy's death, of which causes Scout to snap and ultimately refuse a chance at recovery from his PTSD. It is especially tragic, as this arguably was the catalyst for Scout's later descent into becoming a sociopath.
      • The fact that Scout's trauma ends with him accidentally killing the Sniper. The worst bit is that the Sniper was just checking up on his friend.
      • The Red Spy in Episode 5. He seems to be a well meaning person, hosting parties for the other BLU mercs. He just happens to find out that the Scout killed the Sniper while investigating his apartment. And then Scout walks in.
      • The Blue Scout's death in Episode 5. Despite turning into this inhuman monster, he was still the plucky newbie mercenary from OUATI2F that we all fell in love with. His death scene was very drawn out, played to the tune of Let's Find Each Other Tonight by José Feliciano.
