YMMV / Gerry Rafferty

Go To

  • Epic Riff: Raphael Ravenscroft's sax break on "Baker Street" is the song's most identifiable hook.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Listening to “Baker Street,” with all it’s references to drinking and getting drunk become this, as after the song was a massive hit, Rafferty became a full blown alcoholic. This led to his death from liver failure at his daughter’s house in 2011, aged 63.
  • Misattributed Song: As said on the main page, Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle with You" has been misattributed to Bob Dylan since the day it came out, which is a very understandable mistake since Rafferty's Dylan impersonation is dead-on, and the song is also musically and lyrically very similar to something Dylan might have written.
  • Signature Song: The biggest contenders are "Baker Street" (thanks to its legendary saxophone solo), "Right Down the Line" (probably his most memorable Silly Love Song), and "Stuck in the Middle With You" (a Stealers Wheel song, but Rafferty cowrote and sang lead on it, and it became one of his most iconic tracks, further immortalised by an unforgettable usage in Reservoir Dogs).
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The sax riff from "Careless Whisper" by George Michael sounds a lot like that of "Baker Street".
