YMMV / Genichiro Tenryu

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: In HUSTLE. Signing Tenryu up was a relatively safe bet on the paper, as he was a huge draw and a wrestler with enough history to make many interesting storylines, but a lot of people noted that his bitter, deadpan personality would simply not play well with HUSTLE's trademark hilarity. Surprise, they were wrong.
  • Growing the Beard: Tenryu struggled to find his voice until the AJPW vs. Japan Pro Wrestling rivalry of 1985-1987. It was then, in his singles and tag work against Riki Choshu and company, when Tenryu emerged as one of the greatest Japanese wrestlers of his generation.
  • He Really Can Act: While Tenryu had always been good with the mic, most of it was him being a grumpy trashtalker with a touch of sumo dignity. His tenure in HUSTLE, however, shocked a lot of people for how funny and entertaining he could be in the promotion's signature wacky storylines.
