• Awesome Music: The theme song, "A Lonesome Fragrance".
• Fight Scene Failure: Not all the fights are convincing. Some are obviously CGI.
• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Two years after this series Deng Sha (Consort Zhang) played another royal consort in Princess Silver. This time her character is Happily Married to an emperor, but it ends badly anyway.
  • Two years before this series Cheng Hao Feng (Chancellor Zhang) played Xiao Jingrui in Nirvana in Fire. Seeing Jingrui of all people being an evil politician is utterly hilarious for NIF fans.
• Special Effects Failure: The flood in the first episode is obviously just shots of water interspersed with shots of characters who are nowhere near the water.
• Stoic Woobie: Bai Ping Ting suffers an awful lot in the series, including her adopted parents' deaths, her growing estrangement from their son, and being used as a bargaining chip between two rival kingdoms, but she rarely shows how much all this affects her.
• The Woobie: Poor Dong Zhuo. He's tortured, then tricked into giving information to save the life of a friend who wasn't even in danger, then called a spy and tortured again. And then, after Bai Ping Ting rescues him, he's forced to lie to her, and then to watch as she leaves her old friends, probably forever.
