YMMV / Gender Queer: A Memoir

Go To

  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The book has gained attention due to outcry over its (brief, though graphic) sexual content as it's held in some states' public school libraries. On Amazon, the top reviews are just heated complaints denouncing it for this as "pornography". In 2021, South Carolina governor Henry McMaster sent a letter to his state Department of Education urging them to remove it from all their public school libraries. The fact that the book is about a queer character, with the sex scene featuring two queer people, naturally does not help a bit with critics in places like South Carolina of course (reviews also denounce this).
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Despite what some of the detractors claim, this isn't actually aimed at kids, or at least small children. The actual demographics is for high schoolers grade 10 and above. Didn't stop it from appearing in middle school libraries, however.
