- Hollywood Homely: The other kids tend to ostracize Maddy for her appearance, despite the fact she's described as not that bad looking (and is drawn attractively on the cover). Justified, because teenagers really can be that petty.

- Wangst: One of the main reasons some people don't like Maddy or the book.
