YMMV / GameXplain

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: Between early 2016 and the E3 of the same year, Nintendo news were really scarce and the upcoming Nintendo Switch (then only known as "NX") was still a complete mystery. So they were compensating by reporting every single bit of rumor concerning the NX, which mostly ended up being fakes. The audience grew really tired of this, and even they started taking the piss out of themselves for the overreporting of rumors, and gained the nickname of "RumorXplain". It happened again, this time after the Switch was revealed but before the 2017, January 12 presentation: they were reporting rumors almost everyday, even several times a day, courtesy of Laura Kate Dale.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: "Making the Case for Ridley in Smash" starts with Daisy being the one on trial to get into Smash. After Ridley squashes her, the trial switches over into why he should be in Smash, and Daisy is never mentioned again.
  • Epileptic Trees:
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • All the "Welp, Andre's not here again" jokes became much harsher when it was revealed that this was very much the case behind the scenes, where Andre would disappear for significant lengths of time so that Derrick or Steve would do the work instead. The entire friendship between Andre and the others also falls into this after Derrick revealed how much Andre kept trying to guilt-trip him into staying at GX and all the stress he put Steve under.
    • A recurring gag around the time of coverage of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U was that someone would get beaten up if a script contained an obvious factual error (for example, André calling Ridley a "she" in an analysis video). It was an amusing bit of Self-Deprecation at the time, but it became significantly less funny when word came out that André did legitimately abuse his staff (not physically, as far as we know, but still).
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks!:
    • Jon's "Under the Super Scope" series started to got some backlash after focusing on games he thinks have game design issues such as Crash Bandicoot (1996) and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass while most episodes until then were positive reviews. It doesn't help that they are games from fan-favorite franchises and that Jon is not cowed about his opinions (going as far as calling Phantom Hourglass "the worst Zelda" in the title of the video). While the episodes usually have more than 95% of thumbs up, it usually drops to around 80% anytime he speaks ill of a game (although nothing is as low as the 70% on his negative review of Super Mario 64 DS).
    • Their review of the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection has roughly 40% dislikes due to NintenDaan calling Battle Network 5 inferior to 2 and 3, while also lumping it in with 4. The problem with this is compared to 5, 4 is much more unanimously disliked while 5 is considered a return to form in terms of quality. He even said that his opinion was "not a hot take", which many also disagreed with.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The presenters (André in particular) making predictions on trailers and them ending up coming true. They've done this so much a twitter account named "GameXplain Quotes That Aged Well" was set up by a fan to document these moments. Special mention goes to this moment for predicting a bonus level for Super Mario 3D World to an insanely accurate degree, gleaming information from a four second clip that the Toad in the video was Captain Toad, notes that he doesn't jump, correctly assuming they're puzzle focused, and mentioning the different camera options.
    • The "Time to make a ____ hour analysis/discussion!" fandom meme ended up becoming an Ascended Meme due to them making an 80+ minute analysis of the four-minute trailer of Super Mario Odyssey.
    • The video on why Ridley should be in the then-unnamed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate started with a short bit about Daisy going on trial to get into Smash before Ridley crashes in and crushes her, with the trial then switching over to him. Not only are both playable in Ultimate, but both were announced at E3 2018, with Daisy getting confirmed before Ridley.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "I can't believe X was included before Daisy" was a pretty common complaint each time a new costume was added to Super Mario Maker instead of the core Mario character Daisy, especially when it was something rather obscure or silly like a Mercedes car, Yamamura the pigeon or Master Belch from EarthBound. The joke was so infamous that it still goes on, even after Daisy actually got added to the game.
    • RumorXplain (sometimes LeakXplain) is a Fan Nickname used when GX covers rumors/leaks a bit too extensively.
      • Similarly, "Xplain" added to whatever the topic of the news/discussion is.
      • "RUMOR: (something silly and/or implausible)" is a parody of GX's "RUMOR" videos often written in the comments.
    • Jokes about André being dead (often killed by Derrick) in his absence from GameXplain between E3 and September 2016. (This absence was because of the HUGE The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild analysis, which was over 2 hours long.)
    • Time to make a ____ hour analysis/discussion!note
  • Moment of Awesome: During an open beta stream of Dragon Ball Fighter Z, Derrick, as Android 18, was fighting Adult Gohan when Gohan activated his father-son Kamekameha, only for Derrick to activate a super-move IMMEDIATELY after. You would think he would still get hit, but he instead went STRAIGHT THROUGH the Kamekameha and finish off Adult Gohan.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Ever since 2020, it's been very hard to talk about GameXplain ever since it was revealed that André abused both Derek and Ash as employees, causing them both to leave and starting their own channel, with GameXplain being on a slow decline ever since (the channel itself seemingly having to double down on clickbait just to save face). Meanwhile, André is content to just sweep it all under the rug, and act like it never happened, and is still happening.
