YMMV / Game of Thrones S1E2: "The Kingsroad"

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Cersei's chat with Catelyn while Bran is lying comatose. Is it some form of twisted Kick the Dog moment (telling stories about a son of hers that died while another mother is terrified of losing her own child)? Is it a more calculated attempt to get Catelyn to sympathise with her should Bran wake up and tell her what he saw? Or does she feel genuine remorse? In the books this seems to be the case, where Cersei was instead hoping to intimidate Bran into keeping quiet.
    • Cersei wanting to have Sansa's direwolf killed. Petty cruelty just for the sake of it, or was that Cersei's way of punishing Sansa for not outright corroborating Joffrey's lie about being attacked?
  • Fridge Horror: Nymeria may have saved Joffrey's life. Imagine what worse things would have happened if he had actually stabbed Arya. The little psycho probably would have done it if the wolf hadn't intervened.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Remember Robb Stark's last words to Jon Snow? "The next time I see you, you'll be all in black." Richard Madden and Kit Harington will reunite in Marvel Cinematic Universe's Eternals where Kit will portray Dane Whitman, a.k.a. the Black Knight. Plus, the Black Knight's love interest is named Sersi, pronounced similarly to Cersei.
    • When Catelyn reveals that she suspects the Lannisters have tried to kill Bran, Robb is furious, and Theon says that if a war happens, he will be loyal to House Stark. Luwin mocks Theon, wondering if there will be any battle in the godswood. Yes, Luwin, there will be. And Theon will be defending Bran on this battle. It will only take seven seasons for this to occur.
    • Robert says Ned should get a dog as a better pet for Sansa. Then comes both Stark girls' interesting relationship with The Hound in subsequent seasons.
    • Cersei demands Arya be punished. Robert sarcastically asks if she should be whipped through the streets. Very prophetic of Cersei's Laser-Guided Karma resulting in her Walk of Atonement in Season 5.
  • Les Yay: But of course in the scene where Daenerys gets a lesson on pleasuring Drogo from Doreah.
  • Memetic Mutation: Tyrion slapping Joffrey became a fan favorite moment in the years that followed.
  • Never Live It Down: Some fans held Sansa's lie about Joffrey starting the fight against her for ages, even though the point of her character was that she was a Spoiled Brat who underwent Character Development after experiencing how awful the Lannisters truly were. She also gets a brutal and disproportionate Laser-Guided Karma in this very episode, in the form of her pet dire wolf getting executed, so one can't say she got away with it either.
