YMMV / G.I. Joe (2016)

  • Broken Base: Hoo boy. There's a lot of division over this series.
    • The Lighter and Softer, Denser and Wackier science fiction take has proven divisive, with many fans of "classic" Marvel G.I. Joe seeing it as throwing away what they like about the franchise; conversely, fans of the cartoon and those previously uninterested in G.I. Joe have taken an interest in the IDW comics for the first time. It helps that, according to Sitterson, the Genre Shift was done partially out of respect to Larry Hama and the belief that they couldn't do "realistic" G.I. Joe better than him, and that Hama's continuation of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (IDW) is still running alongside the 2016 series. In the end, the average numbers were equal to slightly less (by about 100 or so copies per issue) than what Hama's run was doing concurrently.
    • Milonogiannis's art: cool and fitting art that evokes Appleseed-era Masamune Shirow, or ugly, sketchy and out of place?
    • The new direction for the characters: does it set them apart from each other and make them more engaging and relatable, or does it clash with what came before and feel out of place in a military unit?
    • This only escalated further once Quick Kick (who in comics was always shown to be an inferior combatant to the various Arashikage ninjas) beat Snake Eyes in their martial arts duel; opinions range from those who don't think Quick Kick "deserved" to win and only happened because of "political correctness", to those who think it's a sensible way to give Quick Kick his own niche in the team (akin to the Flash being faster than Superman to give him a "point"), to those who think the only way it could've happened is Snake Eyes deliberately throwing the fight, to those who think that IDW Snake Eyes is such a boring jerk that him losing the fight is a breath of fresh air.
    • Scarlett's Strike Force became a lightning rod for controversy before it even debuted, with controversial remarks by Aubrey Sitterson resulting in many Joe fan communities outright boycotting IDW until he was let go. The series was canceled officially before the first issue due to low demand, as per IDW, but Sitterson has claimed he was not allowed to promote the book following the comments he made. According to Sitterson, the book couldn't be expected to garner any sort of audience without said promotion.
  • Unexpected Character: No-one expected a Transformer to become a Joe, let alone a Decepticon, let alone Skywarp of all of them.
