YMMV / Futurama S 8 E 9 The Prince And The Product

Go To

  • Anvilicious: Even the Preacher Bot doesn't believe in Heaven, but reincarnation isn't questioned at all. Also borders on Artistic License – Religion, as reincarnation is usually a punishment, or a reflection of how much the soul has to grow, in religions it appears in.
  • Bizarro Episode: The whole episode is extremely weird even by Futurama standards. The main plot segment features a ludicrous ending involving Bender turning into a ship and crashing into Earth and the anthology segments of the episode involving toys have nothing to do with the main segment. David X. Cohen later confirmed the episode wasn't canon and was more so a "fantasy episode."
  • Misaimed Fandom: Many fans assumed the framing device of Leela leaving Fry for a prince she just met was evidence of her being a terrible girlfriend, despite the (admittedly brief) Hand Wave at the end of the episode confirming she had been under a Love Potion the whole time, as well as the Gainax Ending that implies the entire thing wasn't canon (which was later confirmed by Word of God).
  • Strangled by the Red String: Leela leaves Fry (who by this point of the run is her live-in boyfriend, with no Relationship Revolving Door or anything) for a prince she just met after a thirty-minute conversation, and Fry even fights once he accepts the prince as Leela's "true love." This is an Intended Audience Reaction, given the framing device's rushed and melodramatic nature, as well as the reveal near the end that she was under a love spell the whole time.
