YMMV / Futurama S 2 E 11 How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back

Go To

  • Crosses the Line Twice: The scene where Hermes attempts suicide, in all its Black Comedy glory.
    • For starters, encouraging someone to commit suicide (especially if they're already suicidal) is an extremely cruel thing to do. Hermes loudly announcing he's going to jump off a building and Bender shouting "Do a flip!" is so over-the-top it loops back to being hilarious.
    • Being Driven to Suicide over losing your job is heartbreaking (and uncomfortably real) in today's world. Hermes plans to commit suicide over a potential demotion, which is already somewhat of an overreaction. What pushes it into this territory is Hermes finding out that he will be posthumously demoted for not filling in the correct paperwork for his suicide.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Technically correct! The best kind of correct."
    • "Do a Flip" also became internet slang for wishing someone harm or dead.
  • Moment of Awesome: Hermes has four minutes before the Central Bureaucracy closes to find Bender's chip. He does so on time, all set to music, and cleans up the entire Bureaucracy's massive pile of canisters.
  • Values Dissonance: Fry and Morgan's relationship, which Bender points out is illegal, is treated for utter comedy, and when Bender threatens to expose the affair, he gets portrayed as a jerk. With the rise of awareness of sexual harassment in the workplace, it would be very hard to portray this as comedy. Furthermore, Morgan fires Fry when he exposes their relationship, and while Fry does get his job back two seconds later, the fact that it is portrayed as a short gag does not hide the fact that these relationships are illegal precisely because the boss can fire employees if they choose to end the relationship. Similarly, Morgan gets fired because of a high school prom date that she didn't file correctly, not because of her assault on Fry.
