YMMV / Frontlines: Fuel of War

Go To

  • So Okay, It's Average: A decent game that's marred by some technical issues. The single-player campaign seems like an afterthought and the game failed to crack into the modern FPS market.
  • Sophomore Slump: Kaos Studios was created out of the core staff that created the extremely popular mod for Battlefield 1942 called Desert Combat (which arguably inspired Dice to make Battlefield 2 a modern combat game). Since this game was their second major project, but their first one that didn't involve use of an existing game & engine, it was extremely mediocre, the beta launched with little fanfare, and the actual launch failed to make any impact on the first person shooter scene, either in competitive clan play, any sort of impact for the narrative singleplayer, or in the overall multiplayer sphere. Their second full game and third title, Home Front was slightly better received, but didn't stop the studio being shut down and absorbed into THQ's Montreal group.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The key premise of the game is based around a Post-Peak Oil scenario in 2024, and such fear of "peak oil" were common in the early and mid 2000s. However, from 2007 onward (the game was released in 2008), the United States experienced a massive boom in oil and gas production. This was driven by advancements in shale fracking, which unlocked new deposits previously thought to be inaccessible. By 2019, the United States became a net exporter of oil, and the world as a whole was nowhere near an oil peak.

With that said, 2022 saw a great rise in oil prices and shortages due to sanctions caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine (which also renewed fears of a conflict between NATO and Russia), plus prior curbs on oil production in the US and EU due to a focus on green energy, as well as closer relations between Russia and China, making the game somewhat Harsher in Hindsight.
