YMMV / From Elvis in Memphis

Go To

  • Ambiguous Syntax: The "her" in the line "as her young man dies" near the end of "In The Ghetto" could refer to the slain young man's mother, who was mentioned a few lines earlier...or perhaps the young man's girlfriend who is giving birth to his child at the moment he dies, a child who will end up living the same life as his father if conditions continue as they are. After all, a girl's "young man" used to be another term for her boyfriend. (If that is the case, it certainly adds an extra reason as to why the youth turned to crime...he was desperate to provide for his child!)
  • Once Original, Now Common - Though at the time "In The Ghetto", a Protest Song from Elvis who was famously "just an entertainer", stunned audiences and even himself (it took a Batman Gambit from producer Chips Moman to get him to record it), it soon became common for less political artists in The '70s to have at least a couple songs that try to talk about real-world issues. This has caused many new listeners to lose what was special about the song when it debuted, and even liner notes to the album itself dismiss the song as "vacuous", which it can be in comparison to similar songs influenced by it.
