- Ass Pull: The Reveal during The Stinger of Ambrose Bierce being revealed to be a vampire alive in modern day, for there's no hint in the film showing him being bitten aside from a brief shot in a dream as one way earlier in the film. And if he was one, he would have burnt up in the hot sun drenched desert not long after he and Madrid escaped. In all fairness, this was all due to the ending being reshot to emulate more the first film's own, while the original ending had all the non-vampire characters dying or being bitten, including Bierce, which would have led into what would end up being the stinger.
- Crossing into They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character, the stinger could have made more sense if it was reshot to show it was Hangman or even Reece, both who were bitten, that was still alive if they wanted to keep the idea.
- Complete Monster: Quixtla is the mother of Esmerelda and the ultimate source of the killing in the series. Ruling her vampiric clan from within a Mexican inn, Quixtla has travelers routinely seduced and slaughtered by her clan, with the inn decorated by the skulls of her vast number of victims. To carry on her family's ruling tradition, Quixtla turns her daughter into the vampire queen Santanico Pandemonium, mocking Esmerelda's father as she does so and intent on continuing her vicious feeding practice for all time.
- Magnificent Bastard:
- Johnny Madrid is a charming bandito who escapes hanging for a series of robberies. After refusing to kill a man while robbing his stage coach for his show of honor, Johnny leaves his bratty wannabe sidekick to die and ends up at the vampiric inn La Tetilla Del Diablo. When the vampires attack, Johnny takes leadership of the group, even using a hidden blade in his shoe to break out of their restraints and fights his way to freedom, even avoiding the temptations of his vampirized lover Esmerelda.
- Ambrose Bierce himself is a world weary writer trying to get to Mexico. Waylaid by Johnny and his gang, Bierce takes leadership over his group until they are forced to stay at the inn of the vampires. Taking charge during the attack, Bierce keeps the survivors from turning on each other and even after being bitten himself manages to survive the events of the film, living in secret to present day while feeding on skeptical travelers.
- Surprisingly Improved Sequel: The movie has better makeup and effects than part two, as well as being a keeper of the tone of the original.
