YMMV / Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

Go To

  • Broken Base: The make-up on the unmasked Jason; depending on which fan you ask, either it's the most impressive unmasked make-up in the franchise (with the possible exception of The New Blood) for being the child Jason's make-up from the first film turned up to eleven, or it's well-designed, but too immobile and ends up making Jason look more like some gruesomely-disfigured shop dummy.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Jim played by Crispin Glover. Everyone loves him and his ridiculous dance moves!
    • Ted is popular as well, mainly for being Jimbo's Hetero Sexual Life Partner, along with the two of them providing the most comic relief.
    • Of course, the biggest example is Tommy Jarvis, arguably the most popular character in the entire series after Jason himself.
  • Even Better Sequel: This film tends to tie with Part 2 & Part VI for the title of best in the series, thanks to Jason in full-on slaughter mode (with hockey mask!), Tom Savini being at the top of his game with the gore effects, and most of the characters actually being well-acted and written with some depth.
  • It Was His Sled: The fact that it's the young Tommy who kills Jason.
  • Les Yay: During the skinny dipping scene, Samantha is quite eager for her friend Sara to strip down and join them, even dragging her into the lake when she declines.
  • Memetic Mutation: Calling something "the final chapter" when it's not the final installment, ends on a Sequel Hook or raises more questions than it answers (note that this was intended to be the actual final film, but a sequel was made anyway).
  • Nightmare Retardant: Rob's death. The director intended to create a horrifying scene that showcases the helplessness of a murder victim. The result is a scene where Rob, the guy who has been built up to be a worthy opponent to Jason, does nothing to stop him while striking a dramatic pose against a wall and screaming "HE'S KILLING ME! HE'S KILLING ME!"
  • Signature Scene:
    • The opening prologue, with clips from the first 3 movies set to Paul’s campfire story as the narration.
    • Jimbo's goofy dance to "Love is a Lie," often regarded by fans as one of the funniest scenes in the entire series.
    • Jason's death.
  • Squick:
    • In this movie, Jason sports long, discolored, broken fingernails.
    • After taking the fatal machete to the head, Jason falls forward, driving the machete further in and causing part of his head to slide along with it.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Jason dies for good (at least for a while), and his death is one of the coolest ones in a series full of them.
