YMMV / Free Jimmy

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: The film was well-received in its native Norway, but reception from the English-speaking world was mostly negative. Some attribute this to the fact the English dub loses some of the nuances and irony from the original Norwegian-language version of the film.
  • Tear Jerker: Jimmy's death, and the ending where Roy still searches for him, which also features some sad music.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: It says a lot when the only likable characters in the movie is the Elephant and his moose friend. The rest of the characters featured here are complete assholes motivated by their own selfish desires (even the vegan characters are only trying to "free" Jimmy for their own personal gain), and the overall cynical, mean-spirited nature of the movie can be off-putting to many viewers.
  • Uncertain Audience: A major reason why the film wasn't well-received outside of Norway. It tried to be both a dark comedy with plenty of vulgar, slapstick humor and satire, and a tragic story about an elephant trying to escape a circus. Many reviewers felt that those two elements really clashed with each-other instead of blending well together, resulting in an uneven tone.
  • The Woobie: Jimmy in spades. When we first meet him, he's already badly worn out, missing both tusks and being forced to take drugs in order to perform. He then gets a large amount of heroin hidden inside of him. For a while, it looks like he's able to escape with the help of the moose, only to die just as it looks like he's about to get away.
