YMMV / Fractures (ATLA)

  • Fridge Brilliance: Zhao hanging out in the desert despite being a navy admiral makes sense when you remember that the Ocean and Moon Spirits are supremely pissed off at him for his attempted deicide. Given the circumstances, a desert in the middle of the Earth Kingdom is probably the safest place to be for Zhao.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Pim stabbing Suki with a needle in Chapter 10, after the Kyoshi warrior makes one too many rude remarks towards Zuko.
    • In Chapter 14, Kya becoming exasperated with Hakoda continuing to give Zuko a hard time even after the young Fire Lord gets them reunited.
    • Ty Lee throwing some friendly snark at Mai in Chapter 14. Bonus points for doing it in front of Suki, whom Mai had been busy arguing with up to that point. Suki also laughs at Ty Lee's remark.
    • Although Zhao was Spared by the Adaptation, he was cursed by the Tui and La so that every night, he gets soaked by the power of the ocean. Chapter 19’s interlude shows him dripping wet despite being in the middle of a desert.
  • Iron Woobie: Kya was imprisoned by the Southern Raiders after lying about her status as a bender. Upon being freed six years later, she immediately starts taking steps to help Zuko adjust to being Fire Lord and to bring peace between the Fire Nation and the Southern Water Tribe.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Pim stabbing Suki with a needle in Chapter 10 quickly became this amongst the readers and the author.
    • Jokes about Kya adopting Zuko, much to Hakoda, Sokka and Katara's consternation, also became popular very quickly.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • How the Waterbender Prison is described in Chapter 11. Just the sight of the cages, emptied of all prisoners (with the exception of Kya), who have all died by the present day, is haunting to Zuko and Keeli.
    • Ozai's flashback on how he kills one of the palace servants to use him as a scapegoat via pushing him from a balcony. What's worse is that the servant was just an adolescent, and Ozai was initially planning on just straight-up stabbing him.
    • Ozai in general is this even moreso than in canon. Not only did he scar and maim Zuko for speaking out of turn but afterwards when Zuko understandably got angry and told him off for being a awful father he imprisoned him. Ozai then tortured him personally over the span of three years, up until Ozai was defeated by the Gaang. Ozai also completely covered up were Zuko was thereafter (its mentioned that there was a lot of mysterious deaths that occurred after the Agni Kai was kept hush hush) and would use Zuko's imprisonment as a way to encourage Azula to be more sociopathic and jealous that he is getting favored special treatment. No one barring a small few guards knew were Zuko was or what happened to him, not even Azula or Iroh.
  • The Woobie: Lots of the heroes have it out for Zuko, thinking that he's just like his father and little sister. Each time he meets someone from the enemy side, he has to go through the same process of stating his intentions to help bring about a new era of peace in the world. And even some of the Fire Nation government and military staff are reluctant to entrust leadership to a 16-year-old boy who was just recently freed from prison after three years of incarceration.
