YMMV / Fortress (1992)

• Jerkass Woobie: Director Poe is a sadist who seems to enjoy making prisoners suffer, even preventing them from dreaming and using a trustee as his personal manservant despite knowing that he won't let him go to parole. On the other hand... He's spent his entire life in the fortress, never leaving his quarters. His feelings towards Karen also seem genuine, and he appears sincerely shocked when he is shown her betrayal, combined with a Villainous BSoD when he is told that he is being replaced. In the end, he's portrayed as much a victim of Men-Tel as the prisoners.
• Nightmare Fuel: The prison's atmosphere is quite effectively chilling, especially with that happens to the pregnant women, as well as the babies.
  Zed-10: Your babies are the property of the Men-tel Corporation. Crime does not pay.
• Poor Man's Substitute: At times, Frédéric Talgorn's score is clearly trying to emulate Danny Elfman and John Williams, with tracks that sound very similar to something you'd hear in Darkman or Star Wars.
