• Memetic Mutation: "Splatoon for straight people". ^ExplanationThis game is mostly known for being similar to Splatoon, and given that game's fairly large LGBT Fanbase, Splatoon fans were first to widely and derisively label this game as "for straight people" and start making wisecracks about how Square Enix is finally catering to all the straight people with this game.
• Narm: The cutscene that appears if you fail the Squad Missions, which depicts the entire world covered in foam and all the playable characters collapsed dead in the middle of it. Trying to play off foam bubbles as this world-ending catastrophe looks a bit ridiculous, and (given the game's pretense as a fun party foam game) it reads more like the characters partied way too hard with their foam before collapsing drunk/exhausted on the street.
• They Copied It, So It Sucks!: The initial reaction by many to the game's reveal trailer was that it shared more than a few elements with Splatoon, with fans of the franchise especially latching onto how all of the specials showcased in the trailer have direct counterparts in Nintendo's shooter series. While this sentiment would lessen somewhat once more details emerged and it became clear how Foamstars would differentiate itself — with many also coming to like the idea of "Splatoon-likes" becoming a thing — there are still plenty who dismiss it as being little more than a ripoff.
