- Accidental Aesop: Be careful who you meet online. Though Simms does give Luke this advice early on when learning that he has a friend he chats with online whom he has never met, long before The Reveal that it's actually Luke's former body guard, attempting to get revenge on him and his parents.
- Fridge Logic: Simms gets his job back after saving Luke from Woods...which he wouldn't have had to do if he had made it a priority to find out who Mongoose12 was instead of telling the IT guy to just get to it when he could.
- Unintentional Period Piece: Then-President Bill Clinton has a brief cameo As Himself poking fun at his famous saxophone solo, Luke spends his free time chatting on an AOL-eque online chatroom, the climax features a primitive VR arcade game at a shopping mall, and Michael Jordan is briefly name-dropped as a then-contemporary sports superstar. Yeah... In case it's not obvious: this movie was made in the '90s.
