YMMV / Finch (2021)

  • Fan-Preferred Cut Content: Several scenes showing Jeff and Goodyear bonding together more and then meeting other humans were filmed but cut from the final act. Since many fans feel that the film ends too soon after Finch dies and Jeff takes over raising Goodyear, this deletion can feel problematic.
  • Memetic Mutation: The fact that Tom Hanks is once again working with a dog in this film has led to jokes about Finch being a gritty Turner and Hooch sequel.
  • Moe: Both of Finch's Ridiculously Human Robots are highly cute and endearing; Jeff for the eager and childlike way he strives to learn throughout the road trip (like by starting a barking exchange with Goodyear to try to learn the language of dogs), and Dewey for the way he lowers his head in a dog-like way when Finch says something disappointing.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • One aspect that could have been expanded on much more was how Finch kept giving Jeff conflicting advice at any given moment. Jeff even comments on the fact that in Finch's story to explain trust, Finch never actually showed any trust in his coworkers. But that is never particularly expanded on, and Jeff never really brings up the fact that Finch keeps giving him conflicting advice.
    • It also might have been more interesting if Finch died halfway or 2/3rds of the way into the movie rather than right before the ending. A major plot point is that Finch created Jeff to take care of Finch's dog Goodyear, but Goodyear will not bond with Jeff at all (possibly due to being a robot). In the movie, this continues up to even right before Finch dies, but as soon as Finch is dead, the dog almost immediately begins to bond with Jeff and the movie gets a happy ending. But it could have been more interesting if Finch died a while before the ending, so Jeff has to learn to take care of Goodyear alone while also trying to bond with him.
    • Jeff and his fellow robot Dewey barely interact or acknowledge each other's existence. Doing so would have allowed Jeff to explore his robot nature in greater detail and given Dewey a better niche in Finch's unorthodox family unit when he barely does anything after the first act.
