YMMV / Felt

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Maurice Deebank's beautiful guitar playing - particularly on the first two albums - is absolutely spine-chilling.
    • Martin Duffy's keyboard work is pretty stellar as well. No wonder he was picked up to play with Primal Scream later on.
    • Forever Breathes the Lonely Word and The Strange Idols Pattern are considered their best and most consistently strong releases, though all of their albums (yes, even the much-maligned Train Above the City) have their moments of greatness.
  • Black Sheep Hit: "Primitive Painters", Felt's collaboration with Cocteau Twins, is the band's most recognisable song, despite it sounding a lot more like the latter group's work than the former's.
  • Growing the Beard: The first couple of Felt albums tended to have a dingy, almost tribal atmosphere, with vocals recorded low in the mix and mostly reliant on tom drums (ala The Velvet Underground) to keep the beat. By their third album, a traditional drumkit with cymbals was introduced and Lawrence's voice become more prominent, whilst the overall audio quality improved. The band's style became much more melodic and diverse once Martin Duffy took over the reins from Maurice Deebank.
  • Reclusive Artist: Felt kept a notoriously low public profile throughout their run, only playing gigs sporadically, usually ending up supporting much more successful groups, and often only performing on stage for up to half an hour. Meanwhile, Lawrence's perfectionism and personal eccentricities became fodder for music journalists, which gained him a somewhat unflattering reputation as a Mad Artist.
  • Vindicated by History: Felt had very little success throughout their ten-year existence, but nowadays their work is considered greatly influential to the indie music scene.
