YMMV / Fate Decides

Go To

  • Heartwarming Moments: This fanfic is full of them. Any moment where Spyro and Cynder are comforting or showing affection to their children is applicable. Special mention goes to the scene where they first meet Gale on the White Island.
    • Kenra and Gale's relationship especially. The two bond rather quickly. Special mention goes to the scene where Kenra feeds Gale the bottle of formula and holds him in a brotherly manner.
  • Improved Second Attempt: For those who know this fic is written by the same person as Limbo: The Unknown (albeit under a different user name now) its been considered an improvement, in terms of having a similar premise (abused kid turned into an infant hatchling) yet a more interesting overall story and more plausibility to characters and actions. Among various problems with Limbo, it has been cited that the lack of a clear overall story and the dark, depressing nature of the story and how it goes without much levity made it a dressing slog to read. That and the dumb logic of a baby hatchling (the main character of Limbo) being so great at using his elements, as well as a three-year-old like Haze being rather mature and downing an adult dragon guard in Limbo were seen as dumb and breaking of suspicion of disbelief. Fate Decides, in turn, addressed those issues by balancing out the darker parts of the plot with more levity and heartwarming moments, as well as having kids act more realistic for their ages and nerfing Gale and other child character's fighting abilities to be more reasonable powered, the few times they are forced to fight by the situation. In Gale's case, his power seems to be instinctual or not entirely in his control, if at all most of the time.
  • The Woobie: The main protagonists are this is spades.
    • Poor Gale. Already suffering from the scars left by the abuse of his parents, he is transported to a new world after unknowingly signing a 'contract' of sorts with fate, turned into a baby hatchling too young to even eat solid food and left anciently left to fend for himself in the wild. From there, is gets hurt while out alone, scarred by storms, and eaten by wolves. After being brought back by an unknown force with Time magic he is reduced by Rena and carried for with affection, but still has to recover from his injuries from the wolf attack. Sadly, even this respite is a bit brief as Rena does not know to feed him milk at first, nearly starving him by accident, and then the village gets attacked by wolves later on. Depite some respites, he still gets kidnapped and beaten up by Elich. Even after getting to Warfang, he is forced to relieve many unpleasant memories of his parents' abuse after the guardian's chamber seems to act up. Finally, atop of all of that, he gets attacked by Elich again. The poor child can not seem to catch a break during the story, though he at least has his adoptive family to comfort him after said events.
    • Kendra too. The poor child has been suffering since a very young age. He is from an abusive family who carried little to nothing for him and was born into a primitive tribe with very questionable "traditions" about the roles people played. He was beaten by his father for petty reasons, neglected by his mother, and his older siblings apparently were not there for him. He basically used as a work mule by his parents, being forced to get up early each day and help out with various chores from dawn till dusk with basically no free time to play. He was beaten by his father if he did anything 'wrong' and was essentially the only one raising his baby siblings. Worse yet when it's revealed how he came to leave the tribe in depth : after his older sister nearly killed his baby siblings, she fought Kenra and he accidentally killed her in self-defense, but was left severely wounded. His father made him heir after that but when he failed his rite of passage (I.E. jump off a cliff to activate his powers) he was caged, muzzled, fed trash, and left to the sadistic whims of the rest of the tribe. Luckily, his other siblings did not harm him and one of his older brothers freed him and helped him escape while promising to take care of their baby siblings. Bare in mind is currently only seven years old during the story. At least he finally finds a loving family in Spyro and Cynder, as well as Gale and Kalie.
