- Adaptation Displacement: The film is far more well-known and acclaimed than the book, which was a good deal shorter than the movie was, though the novel's author was also one of the two screenwriters for the film.
- Harsher in Hindsight: The film's ending, when Dieyi kills himself, is especially eerie in light of Leslie Cheung's real-life suicide.
- Tear Jerker: The entire goddamn film, but Juxian and especially Dieyi's suicides are probably the most tear-jerking parts.
